The situation

A colleague on Windows ships a ZIP whose names are Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. On Mac the names become mojibake or question marks.

What usually goes wrong

Classic ZIP does not store a trustworthy filename encoding. Archive Utility assumes UTF-8; legacy Windows tools often used regional code pages. Re-extracting with the wrong encoding does not recover the original bytes.

A clearer path

  1. Open the ZIP in Better UnArchiver.
