Can an interrupted recording be recovered? Segmented recording in Better Recorder Pro
The real risk in a long recording is not quality, it is one accident making the whole file unreadable. That is what segmented writing is for: the finished part is already on disk, so an accident costs you the last stretch rather than everything.
Why media is written in segments
Media is not held in memory and flushed at the end. It is written to disk continuously in segments, with an index file alongside it recording each segment's file name, duration, and size.
A pause also finalizes at a segment boundary instead of writing silence or repeated frames. The practical result: at any moment, the segments that already completed are whole, playable files.
What happens on the next launch
When the app starts again it scans the recordings in the output folder, finds the session that did not end normally, and tries to turn its completed segments into a usable recording, correcting details such as the resolution from what was actually written.
A recovered recording appears in the Library like any other: play it, rename it, reveal it in Finder, or delete it.
What can still be lost
The unfinished segment, or its ending, may be lost — that is exactly where the accident happened. Combining segments is not guaranteed either, and in some cases what you get is several separate files.
So the wording stays the same everywhere: completed segments are recovered on a best-effort basis. No promise of full recovery, and no promise of a seamless merge. For material that matters, play the result back before deleting anything.
Habits that reduce the risk
Watch the disk space warning before you start: the app flags low space early, and a long session needs headroom. Keep devices physically secure so a camera or USB microphone is not unplugged mid-take.
The free tier allows 120 seconds of recorded media per session, and at the limit the app stops and finishes saving before showing the upgrade prompt — that path, too, secures the content first.
